What is sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide is a substance that is necessary for soap making. When emulsified with fats and oils, sodium hydroxide produces a chemical reaction called saponification. This is a safe, natural reaction that is responsible for transforming fats and oils into a cleansing, moisturizing soap bar.
Can you make soap without sodium hydroxide?
Sodium hydroxide is needed to make a bar of soap. Without this alkali, the fatty acids found in the oils and butters cannot be saponified. This means that the original properties in the oils and butters would remain the same, and would not provide a cleansing solution. In simpler terms, sodium hydroxide must be used to create the reaction that makes soap “soap.”
What is cold-process soap?
Cold-process soap refers to the technique of making handcrafted bars that saponify at room temperature over a 4-6 week time period. We only use heat up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit in order to melt all of our hard butters/fats. This creates a homogenous mixture of our chosen oils before combining them with the sodium hydroxide solution.
What is the benefit of buying handcrafted soap compared to store bought soap?
- Our handmade soap bars are loaded with glycerin. Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the saponification process. It is a humectant, which increases hydration to the outer layer of your skin. This restores your skin with the natural moisture it needs! Most store bought soaps remove the glycerin and use it for other beauty products.
- Each batch of soap is handmade with love. Each bar of soap is sliced, packaged, and labeled with intention.
- Our ingredients are formulated for our community to experience a wide /range of fatty acid benefits. Each batch includes lauric, myristic, palmitic, stearic, linolenic, linoleic, and oleic fatty acids.

What is special about our soaps compared to other artisan soap bars?
Each of our bars is created using a combination of 3-4 oils/butters, compared to some others that are made with only 1-2 fats. We only use all natural ingredients in our bars. No artificial fragrances, only organic essential oils.
Are your soaps safe for babies?
Our bars are made with 100% all natural ingredients that are safe for children. However, we do recommended purchasing the unscented bars, such as Keep It Simple. Fragrance free is also recommended for those with sensitive skin, eczema, or psoriasis.
If I have sensitive skin, can I use the bars made with essential oils?
We would recommend using our unscented Keep it Simple soap. However, I don’t think you would have any issues with our scented soaps as we only use organic essential oils. Most sensitivities are a result of using synthetic ingredients.
